How safe is your Cloud?

During   September,   Insurance   Brokers   across   the   UK   lost   access   to   one   of   their critical cloud based systems for 2 weeks. The problems were particularly bad for brokers who are completely reliant on SSP for their services as the company offers email and productivity services too. Customers of the brokers could be hit too if they were not notified when their insurance policies expire. 40% of UK brokers use SSP’s system to track insurance renewals as well as to remind customers to reinsure. In addition, it can be used to source quotes and purchase products from third party providers. The downtime therefore, has had a huge impact – limiting the work brokers can do and potentially costing them business. What happened? A power outage started a series of problems initially causing damage to a storage system at a Solihull storage centre. The Solihull data centre has a more traditional daily back-up, so to restore services to these customers SSP worked through a process of ‘unpacking’ data from back-up discs, re-coupling it with application data and then reconfiguring systems for individual customers. SSP has 2 new Tier 3 data centres which many of their customers were already using and the customers at the Solihull data centre were in the process of being migrated. These new data centres replicate data and aim for a 15 minute recovery time. Backup your cloud Often we see people say they don’t need to do backups because everything is in the Cloud. Anyone who relies on a Cloud platform for their business processes should really plan for the eventuality that it may not be available to them, and should do the proper due diligence on the Cloud providers to see what protection they offer. Even some simple manual process, such as a weekly print of upcoming renewals could help significantly when a Cloud system is unavailable. Others may prefer a more comprehensive backup of data and store it somewhere off the Cloud or with another Cloud provider. If you need help implementing or reviewing your backups or Cloud services please contact us.
