Voice over IP phone trial
October 2010
We are testing a new Voice over IP (VOIP) phone service on our main
office number. All our existing phone numbers still work but are routed
over the internet.
We were interested in testing this phone technology ourselves as a
number of clients are interested in the technology. We did have a trial
about 5 years ago but at that time concluded call quality and reliability was
too poor for regular business use.
For those new to VOIP, it is basically an internet based phone with
features usually not found on a fixed landline such as call transfer, a
number in another city or country (with low cost local calling charges), and
voicemail messages delivered by email.
There are a number of service providers, some aimed at single users and
others aimed at offices with full switchboard functionality. Skype is
probably the most well known VOIP provider.
We will let you know in a couple of months how we find the service.
HTC Desire mobile phones
September 2010
It’s that time of year when we can finally upgrade our mobile phones to a
new model. The big question for us was if we should follow the crowd and
go for an iPhone. After speaking to a number of iPhone users we decided
not, and chose the highly commended HTC Desire running the Android
operating system.
Android was created by Google and we were hoping for excellent
integration with our Google hosted email accounts. We are not
disappointed. Within a few minutes of unpacking the phone, all our emails,
contacts, calendars and Google info had synchronised. Plus other useful
Google tools are really well integrated into the phone: Google Maps with
Sat-nav functionality built in at no cost.
The only down side so far, in common with most other large screen smart
phones, is limited battery life. This phone needs frequent charging. We’ve
found keeping the screen brightness down helps a lot.
Overall, this is a great phone, particularly for people with email hosted on
Google Apps (although it has MS Exchange and IMAP email options too).
New office number 0208 819 1360
November 2010
We have retired our old 0845 office number. Calls will be automatically
routed to our new number 0208 819 1360. In the past, the 0845 number
was a good solution for a flexible number, but now we have other options.
BT and TalkTalk include 0845 numbers in their inclusive call packages but
calls from mobiles to 0845 numbers are charged and are not part of any
inclusive minutes package. We hope this change will make it cheaper for
you to call us.
“System Tools” virus attacks
March 2011
Although we are only a few days into March, we have had several calls for
help with PCs infected with the “System Tools” virus. This software
pretends to be a legitimate anti-virus product like Kaspersky, Norton or
McAfee but is in fact a virus.
The program disables various parts of the Windows operating system and
makes life so difficult for the computer user that they are pushed into
paying for the full version of the software. There have been reports of
people providing their credit card details and then being billed excessive
and multiple charges.
Keep your anti-virus software up to date, and if you need help, call us.
Large Multi-Gigabyte backups June 2011
Do you have a large amount of files to backup? photos, videos, music and
data you just can’t afford to lose? Perhaps you have over 40Gb of data?
Many of the online backup services offer these huge capacities but how
can you upload your files? Most broadband lines may have a reasonable
download speed, but uploading is usually a fraction of the capacity. What
with “reasonable use” clauses limiting “unlimited” broadband, you may run
into problems.
This month we implemented a new solution - secure point to point
backups from one computer you own to another internet connected
computer you (or we) have in another location.
To setup, backup everything to a portable hard disk and take that disk to
your backup location. Once activated, only new or changed files are
automatically backed up securely across the internet from then on.
Systems and databases September 2011
We have been very busy over the summer working on a few major
programming projects and database systems.
If you run your business using a combination of spreadsheets, documents
and calendar entries and are feeling that too much time is tied up with
administration then a database solution may be the answer. Keep all your
documents, diary, contacts and processes in one central system
accessible from any internet connected PC.
We are also working with KRM, an educational consultancy company, to
produce online teaching material for schools. So far the project has
delivered a system for teaching reading skills and we have a lot more
exciting work which will be show-cased at the annual KRM conference -
see www.krm-per.com for more details.
CCTV Security Cameras January 2012
We don't just do computers, we do CCTV security cameras too!
Had a request to install CCTV security cameras for a local restaurant, but
which system? There's a lot to choose from and the differences in quality
and cost are significant.
Finally settled on a package that comes with the DVR and 4 cameras. You
can access the unit remotely from your phone or via a software installed
on your pc or laptop. This gives you access to recorded images as well as
live feed. You get emails sent to you when the cameras get disconnected
or snapshots from when the motion detection alarm is triggered.
It's great because now the owner knows how busy the restaurant is at any
given time, when it's shut and even when the bread man comes to deliver
in the mornings.
