Check your backups... February 2011 A City company called us for urgent help with one of their servers. Their Microsoft SQL server database system did not appear to be running and no client PCs could connect after installing some server software updates. The simple solution would be to restore back to the previous day’s backup before the updates were applied. The problem was that no system backup existed for this server - only copies of the database files themselves. The customer thought they were secure because they had been taking regular backups. Although this covered them for data problems, it did not protect them from system failures. After 2 days and with assistance from Microsoft, the system was recovered. Regular backups were then put in place. Usually we find people come to us after a problem has hit their business rather than set aside a little time assessing the existing risks. This software pretends to be a legitimate anti-virus product like Kaspersky, Norton or McAfee but is in fact a virus. The program disables various parts of the Windows operating system and makes life so difficult for the computer user that they are pushed into paying for the full version of the software. There have been reports of people providing their credit card details and then being billed excessive and multiple charges. Keep your anti-virus software up to date, and if you need help, call us. High Availability Storage

         May 2011

One of our busiest customers requires constantly available services, 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. The existing system, although highly reliable could only be backed up once per day and time for updates or maintenance was limited. Potentially losing a day’s work is not an option for this company. We reviewed several systems and eventually settled on 2 storage area network (SAN) systems which replicate in real-time. If one box fails, the other one carries on providing services with up to the second data, and no interruption of service.

Large Multi-Gigabyte backups                     June 2011

Do you have a large amount of files to backup? photos, videos, music and data you just can’t afford to lose? Perhaps you have over 40Gb of data? Many of the online backup services offer these huge capacities but how can you upload your files? Most broadband lines may have a reasonable download speed, but uploading is usually a fraction of the capacity. What with “reasonable use” clauses limiting “unlimited” broadband, you may run into problems. This month we implemented a new solution - secure point to point backups from one computer you own to another internet connected computer you (or we) have in another location. To setup, backup everything to a portable hard disk and take that disk to your backup location. Once activated, only new or changed files are automatically backed up securely across the internet from then on.

Systems and databases                      September 2011

We have been very busy over the summer working on a few major programming projects and database systems. If you run your business using a combination of spreadsheets, documents and calendar entries and are feeling that too much time is tied up with administration then a database solution may be the answer. Keep all your documents, diary, contacts and processes in one central system accessible from any internet connected PC. We are also working with KRM,  an educational consultancy company, to produce online teaching material for schools. So far the project has delivered a system for teaching reading skills and we have a lot more exciting work which will be show-cased at the annual KRM conference - see www.krm-per.com for more details.
