CCTV Security Cameras                           January 2012

We don't just do computers, we do CCTV security cameras too! Had a request to install CCTV security cameras for a local restaurant, but which system? There's a lot to choose from and the differences in quality and cost are significant. Finally settled on a package that comes with the DVR and 4 cameras. You can access the unit remotely from your phone or via a software installed on your pc or laptop. This gives you access to recorded images as well as live feed. You get emails sent to you when the cameras get disconnected or snapshots from when the motion detection alarm is triggered. It's great because now the owner knows how busy the restaurant is at any given time, when it's shut and even when the bread man comes to deliver in the mornings.
As we love Google Apps and Gmail we thought we would try an Android based tablet rather than the usual Apple iPad. Integration with Google Apps is as good as expected. Unfortunately the integration is the only outstanding feature. The speed and usability of the tablet does not measure up to the iPad. It is still a usable tablet but there are issues - for example general web browsing can result in a message saying the browser is not responding “cancel or wait?” This kind of thing never happens on the iPad. One other point to note is that the TF300 is supplied with a click-on keyboard containing an additional battery - it turns almost into a laptop but limited to running Android apps. We never use it but other people may find it useful. Final scores: Asus 7/10 Apple iPad 9/10

Hacked websites - are you at risk?            June 2012

We have recently had a number of people coming to us with hacked websites. Websites built on packaged scripts such as Wordpress, Zen Cart, OS Commerce etc must keep up to date with the latest software patches and updates. If your site is hacked, it could mean malicious messages or porn being posted on your site. Your site could also be used to spread viruses or host fake websites to scam people. Whatever it is your site will probably be taken offline by your web host. Most hosting companies do not keep customer backups - only system backups - and cannot help you to restore your site. Make sure you backup your site and database and keep checking those updates.

Many customers have been reporting issues with their broadband internet lines. It seems that many people have been using the original ADSL broadband happily for some years but BT are now upgrading all customers to ADSL2+. Customers who have an older incompatible router or old router firmware may experience slow speeds, apparantly random disconnects and other line issues. The solution may be a free firmware upgrade or you may need to purchase a new ADSL2+ router.
