Microsoft Windows Server 2012 This year Windows 8 and Server 2012 will be making a big impact. There are some nice new features in Server 2012 for small and medium sized businesses, so this year is a good time to upgrade. Virtualization which was once an expensive Enterprise-only technology will continue to push down into smaller organisations bringing huge benefits for easy backup and business continuity. Once again, security will be a top issue. Websites with scripts such as Wordpress and other package software are particularly vulnerable to being hacked unless kept up to date with software patches as they are released. Cloud based offering from Google, Microsoft and others will continue to gain market share although many of our clients (particularly in the finance and legal sectors) still want the security of “owning” their data on their own systems so traditional server setups continue to be in demand. Our top technology to watch in 2013 January 2013 A second client has chosen to virtualise their old failing servers. The new server is a well specified HP DL360 with plenty of power and space to run the company’s 2 virtualised servers at once. As the virtualised servers are exact copies of the old physical servers, all existing services continue to run normally with no disruption. We are now able to have a stand-by system ready to run in the event of either a software or hardware failure reducing this company’s disaster recovery time from days to hours. Many customers have either completed or are in the process of installing new servers and PCs with the Microsoft end of support for Windows XP, Office 2003 and the server 2003 range coming up. One concern for many is how difficult the adjustment will be to the the new Windows 8 start screen with its tablet-like tiles. As standard, we pre-install the software “Start Menu 8” on all Windows 8 PCs we supply. This gives you a functioning start menu on Windows 8 similar to Windows 7 and takes you straight to the old familiar desktop when you start your computer. This allows an easy transition to the new system allowing you to use the new interface gradually when you are ready. Windows 8 October 2013

Christmas donations

December 2013

Instead of sending company Christmas cards or gifts, we are once again making a donation to charity. This year’s charity is the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Philippines Typhoon Appeal. As many of you know, Cris' family originated in the Philippines and although none of his family or friends were directly affected we are very concerned about the situation there. If you would like to make your own donation, please visit http://www.dec.org.uk/appeals/philippines-typhoon-appeal The office will be closed between Christmas and New Year, but for contract customers with urgent issues, please leave a voicemail or email as usual. We wish all our customers, suppliers, friends and helpers best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
