We are very busy this month delivering and installing new PCs before the Windows XP April support deadline. Companies realise their Windows XP computer will not stop working on that date but will become increasingly vulnerable to viruses and other problems. At the same time, many customers are choosing to update their old Windows Server 2003 systems to a more modern operating system making backup and recovery much easier and faster. Call us to discuss further if you still haven’t made plans to upgrade.

Busy upgrades                                            March 2014

With all the continuing news about government agencies spying on us, data security is a hot topic. Corporate solutions can be difficult and expensive but there is excellent free software available to secure your individual computer. Truecrypt is available for Windows and Apple for free from www.truecrypt.org/downloads.  The software can encrypt your whole hard disk and has other flexible ways to encrypt your data. If you need help or advice with data encryption, contact us. Update: In May, the Truecrypt website suddenly announced the software is not secure and recommends other encryption software. An independent audit is taking place to verify those claims. Phase 1 is complete and no High Severity issues were found.

How safe are Sage Accounts & Payroll?      May 2014

Last week we were called to a busy office where the main PC running Sage for payroll and accounts had crashed with a hard disk failure. We needed to replace the disk and re-install Windows and all the software. The customer said all the Sage data would be safe on the external backup disk because he had purchased backup software and the disk the previous year. In fact, the last backup was 6 months previous - no one had been checking the backups were actually running. Eventually we managed to recover the Sage data from the failed hard disk by using some disk utility tools. This took a long time and was very expensive for the customer. 1. If you run backup software, regularly check it is actually working. 2. Consider automatic off-site backup to the cloud to avoid physical damage or theft of your PC or backups. 3. Saving money on backups can cost you more in the long run.
We recently fixed a problem with wireless network (wi-fi) access at a customer’s office. They have very thick old walls and a complicated layout meaning they had several areas where the wi-fi signal was poor and devices kept dropping off the network. We used a number of Edimax wi-fi repeaters and access points to enable complete coverage, with the public access wi-fi for visitors and staff mobile phones separate from the private internal staff network.

Check your servers                                    August 2014

There is less than a year to go until Microsoft stops supporting Windows Server 2003. Similar to the recent ending of support for Windows XP on PCs, there will be no more security updates or patches released for Windows Server 2003. This is much more important than Windows XP because your server will probably be a critical component of your networking systems. Contact us about upgrading to the latest Windows Server 2012 R2 edition with many new useful features - check out the Microsoft website for details. Complete office systems available - a new server and 5 PCs running the latest Windows systems will transform your office.
What would happen to your company if you lost your Sage data? Over the past couple of months we have met several new customers who have had problems with their Sage systems. Some have taken backups but found they couldn’t restore from them. Others thought they had an automatic backup but found it hadn’t worked for months! All of them now have our own DGT cloud backup service installed, securely backing up Sage automatically every night. We also perform a test restore to make sure the backup works so when you need it most you can be up and running again quickly. Contact Neil about our backup services and read more on the backup and recovery web page.

The new Dell Optiplex 3020 Micro is a tiny replacement for your usual desktop PC. It is small enough to easily fit on your desk keeping it off the floor and away from dust and damage. It is available in a range of models, starting at a reasonable £269 Click here to watch the video for more details.
A number of customers have had failures on their fibre Infinity style broadband lines last month. This has led to a number of enquiries for leased lines. A leased line connects you to the internet on your own dedicated fibre line through a different network to the usual Infinity lines. It is much more reliable and the capacity is dedicated to you, not shared like other lines. There is currently a government voucher scheme to cover the costs of installation which can be substantial. The monthly costs start from around £390 per month. Contact Neil to discuss your options.
