Technology to think about this year...  January 2015

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 End of Life July 2015. If you are still running any 2003 editons of Windows Server then Microsoft will not support them from July. Your business will be at risk as there will be no more security updates or Microsoft support. Talk to us to discuss alternative products. Microsoft Windows 10, mid to late 2015. Windows 8 was unpopular with users and administrators. Microsoft is bringing out Windows 10 which will hopefully be the operating system Windows 8 was meant to be. What happened to Windows 9? Some say programming issues meant confusion with Windows 95 and Windows 98 - so version 9 will be skipped.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be free to exisitng Windows 8 and Windows 7 users for the first year after release. This is great news for everyone who has delayed upgrading to Windows 8 or is currently struggling with it. No release date is available yet, but will probably be available later this year - our guess is around October.

Moving offices

May 2015

Thinking of moving office? A little time spent planning the move can make all the difference between a smooth change over and disaster. In our experience any move of phone lines and numbers often goes wrong - either not working at all or with reduced functionality. With a VOIP business phone system all you need is a working internet connection at your new office and everything will work as usual when plugged in. Another tip is to take a photo of each user’s desk so it can be setup in a similar way in the new office. If you would like any further help or assitance moving office, please call us.
Microsoft has now anounced that Windows 10 will be realeased on 29th July. Icons will be appearing in the taskbar area (near the clock) of Windows 7  and Windows 8 systems that qualify for an upgrade. If you are a home user or work in a small office you can reserve your copy of Windows 10 by clicking on the icon. We advise most users to hold off installing Windows 10 for at least a month or two until any problems or campatibility issues have been found and fixed.

New EU Data Protection Proposals

July 2015

What will be the key changes? Creating a single set of rules applicable across the EU. Establishing a single data protection authority (DPA). Abolishing unnecessary requirements such as notification. Simplifying transfers of data out of the EU. What will you need to do? Adopt an email encryption solution. Data on removable media to be encrypted. Cloud Storage - ensure that data is encrypted at all times. Company laptops should be secured. Adopt a data protection policy and then communicate it to your employees. Proposed fines for personal data breaches will range up to €100 million or 5% of annual turnover.
This month we are looking at WiFi as more and more people are using laptops, tablets, phones and other wireless devices in the office. If you have WiFi coverage problems you could add additional WiFi access points connected to your network by normal Cat5 network cables. If that isn’t possible you could use Wireless Extenders to stretch your signal into hard to reach places. The best coverage is with seamless roaming so your device jumps automatically to the access point with the best signal.

More Internet options

September 2015

Infinity style broadband is still not available in many office buildings, retail and industrial estates and even parts of central London. Previously, the only alternative was a super speed dedicated fibre leased line costing thousands to install and hundreds of pounds per month (although government voucher scheme currently available to cover installation). Now we offer an alternative EFM connection - Ethernet First Mile. This combines multiple copper wire cabling with ethernet technology to deliver 20Mbps line on a dedicated direct access connection. Performance is comparable to a leased line at a more reasonabe cost with none of the contention issues or line fluctuations of Infinity. Call us to check if you are able to get this service.

EFM internet - when fibre isn’t an option
